Overview Of Our New Study:October\November

Wednesdays in October- inductive Bible study looking at selected passages regarding personified evil...please bring a Bible to group! Normal schedule (2nd, 3rd, 4th Wednesdays).

Saturday October 25- gather at my place or another venue for a viewing of The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. This is more than just the average scream-fest, there is a larger point here that will nicely meld with our themes for September and October- very unique treatment. In the same way that M. Night Shymalan used a supposed alien invasion to set up themes of doubt and faith in Signs, this film uses a supposed demonic possession to set up a discussion of deeper truths. Front and center: is the devil real? And: if there is a God, why is there evil, at all? Please do not miss this, even if you normally shun hair-raisers. BASED ON A TRUE STORY!

Then, in November, we'll work our way through The Screwtape Letters.

Finding God In The Questions by Timothy Johnson, MD

Outline Of Craig's Argument

A. There is no good evidence Atheism is true
B. There is good evidence Christianity is true
  1. The evidence points to a creator of the universe
  2. The evidence points to an intelligent designer of the cosmos
  3. The evidence points to God as the source of objective moral values
  4. The evidence points to God revealing himself decisively in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth
    • empty tomb
    • post ressurection appearcnes
    • the origin of the Christian faith
  5. God can be immediately known and experienced apart from "evidence"

Dinner- This Month!

To help ease us into group after our late summer break, we will be eating together during our meetings, this month! Please let us know you are coming so we know how many to prepare for, and please arrive as early as possible (6:45) to help move things along.

Menu!

September 10: Chef's salad

September 17: Hearty beef stew

September 24: Jambalaya

Bread and drinks served with all three!

Schedule

We meet on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesday of each month, at 6:45pm. Our typical format is coffee, and chat 6:45-7, and discussion\study, 7-8:15. We conclude promptly by 8:15 so those of us with children or early morning school\work schedules stay happy :-)

Our Current Study: September 2008

We are discussing the evidence for God by working through the video of a debate that took place several years ago between the President of American Atheists, and a Christian apologist. It is very well done, credible, and thought provoking. Believers, doubters, and others welcome.

We'll break the multimedia into three sections so as to allow plenty of time for "real time" interaction and discussion, as well as mix in food, friends, and fun.

Where

Unless otherwise noted, we meet at Christ Church in Fitchburg, MA, in what is known as "The Bennett Room." Enter the church facility by using the modern glass door at the ramp, which faces Main Street, toward the Fox Street side of the facility. Turn right, then another right, you're there. It sounds much harder than it is. Holler for help if need be :-)

For security, we lock the door a few minutes after we start. If you are running late, just ring the bell and we'll let you in, no harm\no foul.

Christ Church is located at 569 Main Street- if you Google your way to 555 Main, you'll be at the right place (for some reason all the major online maps have 569 in the wrong location).

Please note Christ Church is about .95 mile from Fitchburg State (walk down North to Main, turn right, Main to our door), and an easy half mile from the train station, for those of you joining us from Boston (??!!).

Parking is abundant that time of the evening, up and down Main, or turn on Fox (BEFORE one gets to the property), for parking along the building on Fox, Elm, or Hartwell. Note all doors will be locked except our entrance on Main.

Want To Party?

Saturdays in October: our annual homage to all things Halloween and scary cinema. Not for the faint of heart! We'll meet for light snacks at 7:30, build a fire as weather permits, and que up a horror classic at 8. Informal childcare available.

As we live in what is essentially a classic Second Empire style, decrepit old house..the vibe is built in ;-)
